High School Youth Opportunities:

  • Are you a young person 12-24 years old living in the Twin Cities who would like to host your own show on Listen Up?

    - No experience necessary

    - If selected you will be trained in on the equipment

    - Must commit to at least 6 months of programming

    - Specify live radio or pre-recorded episodes

  • Young people who are interested in media, storytelling, radio and community issues should apply to be a Producer with Listen Up Youth Radio's Youth Media Collective. Producers will be paid to learn about media justice, audio production, community journalism and storytelling from professional media makers while using their voice to share stories that create change in their community. All interns will learn audio recording & editing, create podcast episodes, attend guest speaker trainings by local media makers, and support the Collective's other artistic, journalistic, and entrepreneurial endeavors.

    Job duties:

    - Learn and produce audio storytelling content through research, conducting and editing interviews, and voiceover

    - Provide feedback on peers’ work

    - Co-facilitate workshops with partner organizations

    - Work with Listen Up adult staff and board members on organizational strategy, hiring, etc

    - Support Listen Up’s communication strategy through social media

    Members will be asked to specialize in their role, including possible options such as podcast coordination, social media management, graphic design, content curation, program evaluation, and training in new media makers.

    Skills required:

    - Excited to share their thoughts in discussions, listen to others, and collaborate with passion, compassion, and humility

    - Desire to learn new things, meet new people, conduct interviews, and attend events

    - Interest in media, radio, journalism, storytelling, and/or audio recording (no experience necessary)

  • Young people who are interested in media, storytelling, radio and community issues should apply to be a Producer with Listen Up Youth Radio's Summer Media Intensive. Producers will be paid to learn about media justice, audio production, community journalism and storytelling from local and national media makers, while using their voice to share stories that create change in their community. All producers will produce 15 minutes of content for our podcast YouthSoup, learn audio recording & editing and attend guest speaker trainings by local media makers.

    Job duties:

    - Participating in discussions

    - Learning about different types of media

    - Learning audio production technology

    - Recording interviews and audio stories

    - Producing a 15-17min episode and a 1 min teaser by summer's end

    - Work with a pro media mentor 1x/week

    Skills required:

    - Desire to learn new things

    - Interested in sharing your thoughts in discussion

    - Willingness to go outside

    - Interest in media, broadcast, and/or audio recording (no experience necessary)

  • - Edit radio Listen Up show files, youth forums, and audio stories & upload to our podcast

    - Record date and podcast attribution bumpers

    - Post on our social media accounts about new podcast content

    - Help produce radio promos

    1. Develop and implement marketing and communications campaigns and strategies and monitor their success according to performance metrics

Adult Volunteer Opportunities

  • Are you a journalist, media maker, radio host, or radio producer? Our radio show hosts and Youth Media Collective members are often looking for mentoring in the field. This looks like:

    • Radio Host mentor: Meet with a current youth host to support the development of their broadcasting and on-air skills. Time commitment: 1-5 times over the span of a year for about 1 hour at a time

    • Summer Media Intensive mentor: meet with a youth new to audio reporting to support their production of an original audio story. Time commitment: weekly for 8 weeks, for 1 hour each, June-August

    • Youth Media Collective mentor: meet with one of our continuing youth producers to support the growth of their reporting, producing, and storytelling skills. Time commitment: weekly for 1 hour each, September-May

  • Lead a 60-90 minute interactive training for our youth producers:

    • Resume writing

    • Financial literacy

  • Bring your technical skills to Listen Up by supporting our distribution of original youth produced content:

    • Editing files to prepare for upload to Listen Up’s podcast

    • Uploading the files and promoting them on social media

  • Bring your skills to help Listen Up share our story with our community:

    • Send out Listen Up’s monthly newsletter

    • Provide basic website maintenance (uploading new content to the website)

  • Work with Listen Up’s board and staff in one of our committees or task forces to support our-work. Current committees with openings include:
